Spirulina and turmeric didn't do it for you? Good thing there’s a new wave of skin-saving superfoods in town. When it comes to supercharging your smoothies, these supplements will have you recharged and rehydrated quicker than you can down kombucha tea.
Ashwangha, the Ayurvedic adaptogenic herb on the tip of every fit foodie’s tongue. What are adaptogens you say? Classed as herbs – from Asian ginseng to licorice and maca root – adaptogens are known to help the body adapt to stress, whether environmental or physical. They also enhance mental acuity and physical stamina, which is where ashwagandha comes in. The ancient Ayurvedic herb helps to calm the body and mind – anything from reducing cholesterol levels to boosting brain function – and has been used for thousands of years as a rejuvenating herb. What’s not to love?
Try it: as a powder or liquid extract instead of spirulina, to boost that green juice you’ve had on your Pinterest board since last Spring.

• 1 ripe banana
• 1 kiwi
• 1 tsp ashwagandha powder
• 1 tsp of cinnamon
• 2 dates
• 1 tbsp of almond butter or a small handful of nuts
• Blend together until smooth and creamy
Packed with vitamins A, B, C, calcium, potassium, the list goes on… the fine, velvety-smooth powder of the ‘miracle’ moringa tree is the new super green to rave about. Not only does it fight inflammation and free radicals, moringa is thought to boost the immune system and have anti-anxiety qualities; Monday blues be gone!
Try it: Just a half or full teaspoon of the leaf powder or the liquid extract will do. Add it to your kale-almond butter smoothie (instead of spirulina) after a hot yoga or HIIT class.
MoZINGa! Smoothie (or what we like to call ‘Ditch-the-latte’):
- 1 ripe or frozen banana
- ½ cup mixed berries
- 1 cup almond milk (or milk of choice)
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Handful grated ginger
- Handful spinach or kale
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Serve in a bowl topped with granola, fresh fruit, sesame seeds and a teaspoon of maqui powder.
In a world of blueberries, blackberries and even the energy-boosting acai, the maqui berry might just be the greatest berry of them all. Also known as the Chilean wine berry, the deep purple berry native to South America is loaded with more antioxidants than any other berry, and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits. It can also help to regulate blood sugar and boost the metabolism.
Try it: freeze-dried, grounded or in juice form. As little as a teaspoon of this super versatile booster will work its magic on any vegan coconut ice cream bowl or overnight chia pudding concoction you can think of.
